State Representative Dan Burke, who has represented his near South Side district for 27 years, was defeated by political newcomer Aaron Ortiz who received 54% of the primary vote. Aaron was not alive when Dan first took office. Dan is the brother of Ed Burke, the powerful Chairman of the Chicago City Council Finance Committee, and the longest serving member of that body. In another breath of fresh air, Alma Anaya defeated Angeles Sandoval for the nomination for the position of Cook County Commissioner, 7th District. Alma has served as Cook County Commissioner Chuy Garcia's Director of Administration for the past six years. Angeles is the daughter of powerful State Senator Martin Sandoval and an ally of Speaker of the House Michael Madigan and State Representative Dan Burke (who was defeated in this primary).
